All You Need To Know About Your Training

General Requirements

To qualify for our Class 1 MELT program, you must meet the following criteria:
  • Be at Least 18 Years Old
  • Have a non-probationary (non-GDL) Class 5 Alberta Driver’s license minimum
  • Have A Class 1 Driver’s medical completed by a physician

Timeline & Prices

As of March 1, 2019, Alberta Transportation has instituted the Mandatory Entry Level Training (MELT) Program for those seeking to get a Class 1 license. The MELT Program is described in full below.

The Class 1 MELT Program consists of three components: classroom instruction, in-yard instruction, and behind-the-wheel instruction. Each module has a specified number of hours that must be completed in order to finish the MELT program successfully in 121.5 hours total, including Air Brakes. It will be 113 hours if you already have the Air Brake endorsement.

Mandatory Entry Level Training (MELT) with Air Brake Program  

4 – 6 weeks/121.5 hrs.
$9,000.00
  • 57 hours – behind-the-wheel in-truck training 
  • 17.5 hours – in-yard training 
  • 47 hours – in-classroom training
If you have previously finished the Air Brakes Course and possess either the “Q” endorsement on your driver’s license or a valid Air Brake endorsement certificate, you may complete the MELT without completing the Air Brakes. The following information is included in the price:

  • 57 hours – behind-the-wheel in-truck training
  • 15.5 hours – in-yard training
  • 40.5 hours – in-classroom training

You should also note that the MELT program fee does NOT include the road test permit fee or truck rental for the road test (2 hours).

Hourly Instruction (Refreshers/Evaluations) – $130/hr.

Class 1 MELT road test permit fee – $220.00.

Currently, our Class 1 MELT program operates on Monday – Friday, 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM schedule, varying in 2 to 4-hour increments. However, we understand the need for flexibility.
