Class 1 Courses at Gennaro Transport Training in Edmonton and Area

With Class 1 License You Can Drive:

  • Any motor vehicle or combination of vehicles, other than a motorcycle
  • Class 6 type vehicles, for learning only

What Do You Need to Start Your Training?

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • A non-probationary (non - GDL) Class 2, 3, 4 or 5 Alberta driver’s license
  • An approved Class 1 driver’s medical completed by a physician

How Much Training Do You Need?

Alberta Transportation has implemented the Mandatory Entry Level Training (MELT Program) for individuals wanting to obtain their Class 1 License as of March 1, 2019. Please find details of the MELT Program below. 

The Class 1 Melt Program is made up of multiple components; Classroom training, In-yard training and Behind the wheel training. Each module has a set amount of hours required to be completed in order to be successful with the MELT program. Total number of hours including Airbrakes is 121.5. If you already have the Airbrake endorsement it will be 113 hrs.

Mandatory Entry Level Training (MELT) with Airbrake Program 

(4 - 5 weeks / 121.5 hrs.) - $9,650.00

57 hours – Behind the Wheel In-Truck Training

17.5 hours – In-Yard Training
47 hours – In-Classroom Training

If you have already completed the Airbrakes Course & have either the “Q” endorsement on your driver’s license or a valid Air brake endorsement certificate you would complete the MELT without the Airbrakes. price and details are listed below:

Mandatory Entry Level Training (MELT) without Airbrake Program
(4 - 5 weeks /113 hrs.) - $9,500

57 hours – Behind the Wheel In-Truck Training
15.5 hours – In-Yard Training
40.5 hours – In-Classroom Training

Hourly Instruction (refreshers/evaluations) - $130/hr.

Before you are eligible to Book a Class 1 Road Test, you will also need to ensure you have completed:

  • Proof of Completion of MELT program from an approved Commercial Driving School
  • Air Brakes - must have either a "Q" on their license or their original air brake endorsement
  • Completed Class 1 medical
  • Completed Class 1 enhanced knowledge test – study both basic as well as commercial driver guides (do not skip the bus section!)
