Understanding Alberta's Class 1 Learning Pathway

The Class 1 Learning Pathway is Alberta’s structured system for getting a Class 1 truck licence. It sets clear rules for how drivers are trained, outlining what must be learned, practiced, and demonstrated.
It ensures every new Class 1 driver meets the same safety standards. This pathway exists to make training consistent across Alberta, helping drivers build real skills, not just pass a test.
It also helps employers and the province trust that licensed drivers are road-ready. The pathway applies to everyone pursuing a Class 1 licence in Alberta. However, not everyone follows the same route.

MELT Replacement Policy
Alberta Has Replaced MELT….
And here’s what that means.
As of April 1, 2025, the MELT program is no longer used in Alberta. It has been officially replaced by the Alberta Class 1 Learning Pathway Program. This new system is mandatory for anyone working toward a Class 1 truck licence in Alberta.
