Class 1 Truck Driver Training in Edmonton

Gennaro Transport Training offers comprehensive Class 1 truck driver training in Edmonton. Interested candidates can apply at our driving school. Candidates who undergo this training can operate trucks, trailers and all vehicles with air brakes.


Gennaro Transport Training provides a variety of transport training courses in Edmonton that are tailored and updated to perfectly fit the industry's requirements. You can take these courses at your convenience. To make the learning process more comfortable, we also offer a range of online courses. 


Our Class 1 MELT course will last for a total of 121.5 hours and will prepare you to be capable of handling any automobile or combination of vehicles other than a motorcycle.



With a Class 1 License, You Can Drive:

  • Any motor vehicle or combination of vehicles, other than a motorcycle

  • Class 6 type vehicles, for learning only

Purpose of the Course

The Class 1 MELT program provides the best possible training administered by the most experienced and qualified trainers. This course aims to provide you with the following:

  • Theoretical knowledge

  • Practical training

What Do You Need to Start Your Training?

In order to be eligible for our Class 1 MELT Program, you need to fulfill the following criteria:


  • Be at least 18 years old

  • Have a non-probationary (non - GDL) Class 5 Alberta driver’s licence minimum

  • Have a Class 1 driver’s medical completed by a physician

How Much Training Do You Need?

Alberta Transportation has implemented the Mandatory Entry Level Training (MELT Program) for individuals wanting to obtain their Class 1 licence as of March 1, 2019. Please find details of the MELT Program below. 

The Class 1 MELT Program is made up of multiple components; classroom training, in-yard training, and behind-the-wheel training. Each module has a set amount of hours required to be completed in order to be successful with the MELT program. The total number of hours, including Air Brakes, is 121.5. If you already have the Air Brake endorsement, it will be 113 hrs.

Mandatory Entry Level Training (MELT) with Air Brake Program 

(4 - 6 weeks/121.5 hrs.) - $9,000.00

  • 57 hours – behind-the-wheel in-truck training

  • 17.5 hours – in-yard training

  • 47 hours – in-classroom training

If you have already completed the Air Brakes Course, and have either the “Q” endorsement on your driver’s licence or a valid Air Brake endorsement certificate, you would complete the MELT without the Air Brakes. Price and details are listed below:

Mandatory Entry Level Training (MELT) without Air Brake Program 

(4 - 6 weeks/113 hrs.) - $8,800.00

  • 57 hours – behind-the-wheel in-truck training

  • 15.5 hours – in-yard training

  • 40.5 hours – in-classroom training

Please note: The MELT program fee does NOT include the road test permit fee or truck rental for the road test (2 hours).

Hourly Instruction (Refreshers/Evaluations) - $130/hr.

Class 1 MELT road test permit fee - $220.00

Before You Are Eligible to Book a Class 1 Road Test, You Will Also Need to Ensure You Have Completed and Can Present:


  • Valid government-issued photo ID

  • Proof of Air Brake Endorsement

  • Proof of completed Class 1 driver’s medical

  • Proof of completion of MELT program

  • Proof of completion of the Class 1 knowledge exam
