With a Class 2 Licence, You Can Drive:
Any motor vehicle that the holder of a Class 3, 4, or 5 driver’s licence is allowed to drive
A bus
A Class 1 or 6 vehicle, as a learner only
What Do You Need to Start Your Training?
Be at least 18 years old
Have a non-probationary (non - GDL) Class 5 Alberta driver’s licence minimum
Have a Class 2 driver’s medical completed by a physician
How Much Training Do You Need?
Alberta Transportation has implemented the Mandatory Entry Level Training (MELT Program) for individuals wanting to obtain their Class 2 licence as of March 1, 2019.
The Class 2 MELT Program is made up of multiple components; classroom training, in-yard training and behind-the-wheel training. Each module has a set amount of hours required to be completed in order to be successful with the MELT program. Total number of hours including Air Brakes is 58.5. If you already have the Air Brake endorsement, it will be 50 hrs.

Class 2-S MELT (Mandatory Entry Level Training) with Air Brake Program
(3 - 4 weeks/62 hrs.) - $5,000.00
24 hours - behind-the-wheel in-bus training
13 hours - in-yard training
25 hours - in-classroom training
If you have already completed the Air Brakes Course & have either the “Q” endorsement on your driver’s licence or a valid Air Brake endorsement certificate, you would complete the MELT without the Air Brakes. Price and details are listed below:

11 hours - in-yard training
18.5 hours - in-classroom training

45 Min – behind-the-wheel in-bus road evaluation
Hourly Instruction (Refreshers/Evaluations) - $120/hr.
Class 2-S MELT road test permit fee - $175
Before You Are Eligible to Book a Class 2 Road Test, You Will Also Need to Ensure You Have Completed and Can Present:
Valid government-issued photo ID
Proof of completed Class 2 driver’s medical
Proof of completion of MELT program
Proof of completion of the Class 2 knowledge exam
